Data sources and methodology

How NAVGreen separates source data, customer inputs, calculations and uncertainty so users can review the basis of an output.

How to read update times

AIS & movement

Observation or message time

Coverage-dependent; may be delayed or incomplete

Weather & ocean

Model run, valid time or observation time

Estimated at a resolution, time and location

Market references

Publication or provider update time

May be delayed, revised or licence-restricted

Customer inputs

Input, document or stated effective time

Depends on customer authority and accuracy

Four data categories

Coverage varies by product module, geography, provider, subscription and customer configuration. A category listed here does not mean every field is available in every plan.

  • AIS and vessel movement: messages may include position, time, course, speed and reported vessel fields. Satellite and terrestrial coverage can contain gaps, delays, duplicate messages or inaccurate ship-reported values.
  • Weather and ocean conditions: provider observations, forecasts, hindcasts or model grids may include wind, waves, swell, current and other environmental variables. Grid values are estimates for a time and location, not direct measurements at the vessel.
  • Market indices and reference data: licensed or public references may include freight indices, bunker prices, port or trade information. Publication calendars, corrections, licensing and redistribution rules may apply.
  • Customer inputs: voyage, vessel, contract, operational or document inputs supplied by the customer remain dependent on the customer’s authority, completeness and accuracy.

Timestamps and freshness

NAVGreen aims to display the most relevant available time next to data and outputs: an observation time, provider publication or update time, forecast run, customer input time, or calculation batch time. These times are not interchangeable.

“Latest” means the latest record available to the applicable NAVGreen workflow, not a guarantee of real-time delivery. Delayed, cached, corrected or unavailable feeds should be treated according to the timestamp and status shown in the product.

From source to output

  • Normalize formats, units, coordinates and time references where the workflow requires it.
  • Apply basic quality checks and retain source or provenance information where available.
  • Match records across time and location; interpolation or aggregation may be necessary and can introduce uncertainty.
  • Run the selected calculation or scenario using the customer’s assumptions and configured data coverage.
  • Present the result with material inputs, assumptions, dates and limitations where the product supports them.

Model and data limitations

  • AIS can be incomplete, delayed, duplicated, switched off, incorrectly reported or affected by coverage and transmission conditions.
  • Forecasts, hindcasts and ocean models are estimates. Resolution, run time, provider method and local conditions can produce different results.
  • Market references may be delayed, revised, indicative, licensed for limited use or not representative of a specific fixture.
  • Calculated routes, times, consumption, costs and performance views depend on assumptions and are not guaranteed outcomes.

Decision boundary

NAVGreen outputs support commercial analysis. They are not instructions for navigation, vessel safety, weather routing, legal interpretation, expert evidence or investment decisions. The master, owner, operator, customer and their professional advisers remain responsible for decisions within their respective roles.

Turn enterprise requirements into verifiable commitments

Bring your data, access, retention and service requirements to an enterprise demo. We will separate current capability, configurable options and commitments that require a written agreement.
